Makeup Mondays: New Drugstore Faves

I feel the need to preface this by saving I am not a makeup artist, beauty guru, beauty blogger, or expert – but, other than experimenting in the kitchen with recipes I really enjoy trying new looks and playing with makeup products.

Since I was teenager using that awful blemish control Covergirl powder that came in the green compact and smelled like a toilet cleaner, I’ve loved makeup and really enjoyed trying things when they come out. My tastes these days are a little more refined but the fun and passion for it is still the same.

I often get lovely comments about my makeup in Instagram photos, many of which ask what makeup I use and like, so I thought it would be fun to do the occasional post about things I am using and loving. If you like this sort of post, have found products you love or want to see more please comment below or on Instagram.

L’oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

Available at CVS, Walgreens, Target and other retailers that sell L’oreal products

Price: $16.99

This foundation has a unique applicator that is a foam cushion in a compact which also includes a soft round applicator. The formula is medium coverage, but buildable if you prefer a full coverage foundation. The finish is soft and luminous and it gives you a nice glow without being dewy or shiny. It sets well with pressed and loose powder. It doesn’t have the longest staying power, but will stay put and look the same for at least six hours before needing a touch up. A huge plus is the the compact is obviously portable, so touch-ups aren’t a big production.

IMG_8489ColourPop Super Shock Eye Shadows

In the shades Porter and Weenie

Available at

Price: $5 each

I’m including these shadows in my drugstore faves even though they are only available online because they are so affordable. The colors are highly pigmented and creamy and my two favorites come from the collaboration with beauty vlogger KathleenLights called ‘Where The Night Is’. These two colors have rose and gold undertones and are perfect together.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream LipstickIMG_8490

In the shade Tea & Cookies

Available at CVS, Target, Ulta and other retailers

Price: $7

Liquid lipsticks are really popular at the moment for their high pigmentation and long staying power. Many formulas can be overly drying and make your lips feel chapped. I like the formula of the new NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks because the color payoff is great, and it stays on but dries to a soft velvet matte finish that doesn’t dry out your lips.

My favorite shade is Tea & Cookies, a soft cool pink that looks beautiful on many skin tones.

IMG_8488Wet n Wild 1 Step WonderGel Nail Color

In the shade Condensed Milk

Available at CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target, Walmart and other retailers

Price: $4.99

I love having my nails painted but am notorious for chipping them quickly. I don’t even get regular manicures because it’s such a waste of money for me. Recently, I tried the Wet n Wild 1 Step Wondergel and was surprised by how it held up. For four days I was chip free (which for me is a miracle without actually getting a gel manicure) and the color ‘Condensed Milk’ reminds me of one of my faves from Essie that unfortunately chips. It’s a pretty neutral creamy color that compliments any skin tone and just gives your hands that polished and clean look.
